Structural Excellence

Tata Structura’s hollow steel has been instrumental in building some of India’s most iconic structures

Since it was launched in December 2005 — as part of Tata Steel’s continuing commitment to supporting the construction and infrastructural needs of the country — Tata Structura has been instrumental in the building of airports, metro and railway stations, malls, IT and industrial complexes, conveyor galleries, solar support structures and so on.

Tata Steel’s Structura conforms to the highest standards of manufacturing, and are known for their uniform material strength (test certificates are included with products); uniform thickness, dimensions and length; high ductile strength (making it easy to weld, bend and fabricate); and for their durability and better resistance to corrosion. Additionally, structures made of Tata Structura Hollow Sections are lightweight and thus more resistant to seismic forces, making it the preferred brand by architects and structural engineers.

Tata Structura’s four types of steel hollow sections — rectangular, circular and galvanised — have been used across some of the most pathbreaking constructions that adorn city skylines in India. Here are a few of them:

Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru

Bengaluru’s international airport, completed in 2022, serves ~38 million passengers yearly, making it an important hub for domestic and international travellers. The engineering marvel, spread over 4,000 acres, was constructed using 2,000 MT of high-quality hollow steel manufactured by Tata Structura.

Trump Tower, Mumbai

This towering 78-storey, 268-metre-high skyscraper has the first-of-its-kind golden curtain wall façade in India. Approximately 900 MT of Tata Structura’s YST 355 grade steel hollow sections — known for their lightweight, superior strength, smooth finish, and ease of fabrication — were used in this landmark building in Mumbai’s premium Worli neighbourhood.

Billion Impressions, Ranchi

Inspired by a human thumb impression, ‘Billion Impressions’ celebrates India’s diversity and the unique identity of each individual. Made with Tata Structura’s YST355 steel sections, the 16-tonne, 12.5-metre-tall art installation, housed in Ranchi’s Bhagwan Birsa Munda Smriti Park, highlights the importance of being bound to and learning from our heritage as we progress towards a brighter tomorrow.

Thyagaraj Stadium, New Delhi

The venue of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi also happens to be India’s first Green Building Conference (IGBC) Gold certified stadium. Another first for this 16.5-acre, 5000-seater stadium? A 100 MT truss was erected around 107-meter length in a single piece using 450 MT of Tata Structura.

Biswa Bangla Gate, Kolkata

Perched atop the Biswa Bangla Sarani, a major thoroughfare, Biswa Bangla Gate mirrors Kolkata’s unity, progress and creativity, and pays homage to Rabindranath Tagore and his composition ‘where the mind is without fear’. Built using a total of 400 MT of steel by Tata Structura, is an icon of a modern City of Joy.

Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan, Kolkata

Approximately 3,000 tonne of Tata Structura steel hollow sections give this symbol of West Bengal’s creative trade vision, its strength and flexibility. Two large-format column-free pavilions of ~1 lakh sq ft each span a campus that can host 2,50,000 guests and over 1,000 exhibitors.

Renewable Energy Museum, Kolkata

Built using 180 MT of Tata Structura steel hollow sections, the Renewable Energy Museum rises to a height of 27 metres. Its strength and superior section properties made Tata Structura the primary material of choice for this project, which is equipped with 2,000 solar panels. The dome uses the surplus energy it generates to provide green electricity for the Eco Park at Rajarhat in the city.
