A spotlight on some of the sporting events and teams in India and around the globe sponsored by Tata companies
From building infrastructure for sports and recreation, to sponsoring promising athletes and even Olympians, the Tata group’s legacy in the promotion of sports endures to this day. Unsurprisingly, many sporting events and teams in India and around the globe are sponsored by Tata companies even today.
A spotlight on some of them.

In The Long Run
The Tata group first forayed into marathons in 2014, when Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) became the title sponsor of the New York City Marathon, the world’s largest marathon — and it hasn’t looked back since. As of 2024, TCS is the title sponsor of 13 running events across four continents, with a combined participation of over 6 lakh runners. These include the world’s largest cross-country run (TCS Lidingöloppet) and three of the seven Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM). TCS also sponsors the London Marathon as of 2022, and added the Sydney Marathon, Australia’s largest marathon, to its portfolio in 2024. TCS uses its technology domain expertise to elevate the marathon experience for runners and spectators.

While TCS is a formidable presence in the world of running, other Tata companies also host marathons. These include the Mumbai Marathon and India’s first certified Ultra Marathon, both of which are sponsored by Tata Sons; the Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata; the Open Saurashtra Half Marathon hosted by Tata Chemicals and the Tata Steelman Triathlon in Port Blair, UK.

Batting for cricket
Every March, Indian cricket fans proudly wear the colours of their state champions, preparing for two months of cricket mania. In 2022, the trumpets sounded at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, home to the Tata End, with a special fervour. It was Tata’s first year as the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a partnership that is now set to continue until at least 2028.

The group took its support a step further in 2023, sponsoring the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in its inaugural season, thus giving an impetus to women’s cricket. The two leagues have successfully brought together the international cricket community, both players and fans alike.

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament, held in Wijk Aan Zeein, Netherlands, has been played for over 85 years (with the company sponsoring it since 2011) and is considered the Wimbledon of Chess. Grandmasters like Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov have played in it.

In 2018, Tata Steel started what has become India’s biggest chess tournament. Held in Kolkata annually, the Tata Steel Chess India Tournament is part of the International Chess Federation. It is attended by global grandmasters such as Magnus Carlsen, Valentina Gunina and Arjun Erigaisi.

Gold Standard
India were the undefeated Hockey Olympic champions from 1928 to 1956, and for three of those wins (1948, 1952, 1956), the Indian Hockey Federation was led by Naval Tata. This history with the sport prompted Tata Steel and the Tata Trusts to build the Naval Tata Hockey Academy (NTHA) and the Odisha Naval Tata Hockey High Performance Centre (ONTHHPC).

Both academies have their own teams and regularly host competitions such as the Odisha Naval Tata Hockey Grassroots League Championship and the Naval Tata Hockey Academy Grassroot Festival to promote the sport. They have nurtured players like Anmol Ekka, Mamita Oram and Munmuni Das, who are in the Indian Junior Hockey Team, and Jyoti Chhatri, who is in the Indian National Women’s Hockey Team.

Kicking Into Gear
Established in 2017, Jamshedpur FC is a culmination of the support that Tata Steel has provided to football over the years. It is the first Indian Super League (ISL) team to have its own stadium and facilities, as well as a grassroots programme for youth development, along with the Tata Football Academy (TFA), India’s first residential football academy.

Ready, Set, Go
Jaguar Racing has been participating in the Formula E Championship, the world’s first fully-electric international single-seater street race, since 2015. In 2022, TCS joined it as a title sponsor. In 2024, the team had its best year yet, winning the ABB FIA Formula E Teams’ World Championship..

JLR’s penchant for rally racing is seen in the Defender Rally Series. Conceived in 2013, the series has drawn amateur and aspiring professional drivers, who take the vehicle across rough terrain to test its features. From 2025 onwards, Defender will be the official partner for the Dakar Rally and will compete from the 2026 season.

In Service of Courage
JLR has been the presenting partner for the Invictus Games since its inception in 2014. The games have been held every two years since 2014 to celebrate the indomitable spirit of wounded, injured or sick armed forces personnel, both veterans and still serving.

An international multi-sport event, the games are not about high performance or medals, but are intended to form a part of the recovery process for soldiers returning home, allowing them, through the opportunities provided by the foundation, to reclaim their identity beyond the injury and trauma of war.

Par for the course
In the early 2000s, Tata Steel took an interest in nurturing talent in golf, setting up the Golf Training Centre to train budding golfers in the country. The company’s support to golf extends beyond the training centre; it is the title sponsor of the Professional Golf Tournament of India (PGTI).

While Land Rover has been the Worldwide Partner of the Rugby World Cup since 2015, it has been supporting the sport for much longer. Over the last 20 years, through sponsorships and partnerships, Land Rover has nurtured Rugby at the grassroots level, with national and international series and teams inspiring children globally to pursue the sport.
